Project Description

Our clients were experiencing an overwhelming amount of water in their crawlspace due to the west side of the foundation being three feet lower than the street and sidewalk. We worked with an engineer to develop a permanent solution since the french drain that was installed in years prior by the previous homeowner wasn’t working anymore. After resolving the drainage issues and installing a new flagstone pathway to the backyard, the rest of the project created four new outdoor living spaces, with three of them maximizing their view of the Flatirons and the fourth creating more private gatherings/kids activity space. Using the combination of irregular red wet set flagstone and composite decking, the two-tiered upper spaces tie seamlessly together while expanding their previous outdoor space. Within these outdoor spaces includes a dining space protected by a steel pergola which creates special tension by not connecting to the house but having all of its joists come within 6” of it. This structure has two lighting systems built into it, one for the grill and the other for ambient light throughout the space. To ensure ample protection from the sun, we installed an automated retractable shade screen that can be extended with a flip of a switch. The other patio allows the clients to relax next to a fire pit built with large moss rock boulders which act as a backdrop and sculpture in the space from inside when not in use, highlighted by landscape lighting. The pergola structure and moss rock boulders were all installed using a crane to move them from the adjacent road and into the client’s backyard. The surrounding beds are filled with perennials, grasses and structure plants that frame the space while softening them with seasonal interest. Landscape lighting was installed intentionally in transition areas to highlight steps as well as to showcase the plant material during evening hours.
